Google has recently announced that they have started to use HTTPS as a ranking signal, albeit small at this stage.

    http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com.au/2014/08/https-as-ranking-signal.html

What do people think of this? It looks pretty clear that "over time" this will become more important.

    Cheers,
    Chris

Idealists have wanted SSL to be standard since the 90s. Coincidently I mentioned to my biz partner that we should move to SSL a few months ago. He disagreed. Now once again we have to play catch up. I think it was obvious that'd it would eventually be a ranking factor albeit hard to judge what percentage that is.

Have you noticed an increase in the SERPS for dntrade, Chris ?

We have moved a few sites to HTTPS this year yet in most cases they were marketplace style sites. We will test moving a affiliate property later this year. Further to this have mostly been positive the site moved the only one which caused issues was where they left HTTP pages live and did not implement correct redirects via the developers yet we were onto the issue quickly.

More details here on these changes -

It's hard to say since I changed a bunch of other things at the same time which caused a temporary dip...

another cost to the client, i'm starting to feel like a dodgy mechanic

" ohh, and you will need this and that and that and that............"

    --------

"over time", yes that is their way of saying " you better do it NOW "

So if this is about trust then the most expensive Verisign cert should convey the must trust; but if this is about selling stuff down our throats then Googles own budget cert. should rank higher than verisign.

That the test I would like to see - do they rank their own ssl cert above others.

I see that using https makes your site as if it is secure but I can't see the results of it as a ranking signal at least in our case.

I've just finished changing one of my big sites over to https.

Hopefully I've done everything correctly, but it's still a little worrying. If the rankings suffer I'll be very upset!!!

What is weird is I have my site partially encrpted and a heap of pages where I should be using rel caniocal etc

Anyway. I've noticed traffic is coming in off terms like web hosting melbourne which I am now on second page for however the root is just standard www.

Weird. But I will take it!

For those of you concerned that not *all* of the pages on your site are serving the https:// version, you can add a .htaccess file entry that will force any and all requests for your domain to the correct path.

Google is your friend on that one, but if required, yell and I will let you know where to start. That one file is all that it takes.

I understand why this is being done, and I for one am glad that Google have added it as a rank signal. Think of all those punters using your nice new shiny, responsive, database driven site over an un-encrypted WIFI / network. Begging for trouble. SO now that they have pushed mobile browsing, there are security holes that need to be addressed. Maybe ask any of the numerous A list celebs that have had their Facebook / Twitter accounts hacked by the firesheep? exploit while they were sitting at a cafe, logging in to check their social media accounts.

I don't agree with many things that google do, but https:// protocol is easier for Google to push the world on, as opposed to trying to get your average household / cafe to encrypt data over their WIFI.

This morning Google is already ranking the https version of the home page and a couple of other pages. Less than 24 hours after the change!

No changes to rankings at this stage.
