How NOT to start in Affiliate Marketing!"

We get asked quite a lot by affiliates "How do I get started in affiliate marketing?". This question has far reaching answers and is so broad as to require chapters for us to truly delve into it, so instead we take the road less wandered and begin with how NOT to start off in affiliate marketing.

The concept of making money from home is everyone’s dream. No longer would you need to abruptly wake to the horrific sound spewing out of your alarm clock, pulling you out of dreams that are sometimes far more appealing than the reality of your life. No longer do you need to put on a smile working with people you can't stand or be paid less than you feel you are worth. This is truly the appeal of being an affiliate marketer, being your own boss and creating an income without the constant 'pings' of customer support emails hitting your inbox.

The reality of affiliate marketing, like most "dream" jobs is slightly different and can be a road paved with false promises, false prophets, shattered dreams and pie-in-the-sky products that offer the world and give you little to nothing in return. But all of this can be avoided if you use your common sense and the same Devil’s Advocate approach you would to any business - "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is".

"Sign Up for our FREE system and start making money in hours"

It seems obvious that this claim is utter bulls**t but you would be surprised just how many intellectual and smart people get caught out. It's not because they had a moment of insanity or got a knock to the back of the head. No, this comes down to simple desperation to change your life RIGHT NOW and works a treat when the bank account is running low. This is what these people offering this kind of program want, if you are in the above situation, you are their target market.

Generally the "FREE" statement only relates to a useless video or eBook that tells you nothing but promises you enough to in turn make you want to buy the "Full" version which will cost anywhere from $97.00 - $997.00. Usually what happens after this investment is an offer for one more product that promises that it could be the difference between making $100.00 per week and $100,000.00 per week. Not only was the first product re-hashed rubbish you can find anywhere for free on the internet but it was likely outdated too.

Realising an offer to become a super affiliate overnight is about as likely as pigs flying is the first step in truly recognising affiliate marketing as a business. It's a relationship between you and the people you promote, you make them money and they'll pay you for your efforts.

There is no "get rich quick" in affiliate marketing and Google is ever making this a truer statement as each year rolls by. They don't want the internet crowded with useless, duplicate rubbish either so in an effort to clear out the cesspool the demand on affiliates is to create useful content and websites that add value to the internet and the user experience.

Starting off as an affiliate usually requires you to delve in with little investment. You can spend the next 12 months trying to find that perfect niche and never start truly learning what it takes. All affiliates make mistakes but this is a vital tool for learning what works and what doesn't, the trick is to not make costly mistakes such as investing in programs or learning suites that go against everything ethical affiliate marketing stands for.

Join forums and local networking groups, read blogs and news aggregators for affiliate marketing and SEO articles. Whilst doing all of this think of niches or markets you personally enjoy - it is far easier promoting products or services that you yourself enjoy and is not such a hard slog. This can then in turn enable you to take what you have learnt from your first site and rinse and repeat the process in other areas of interest or profitability.

To be honest most forums and user groups offer little good information on Affiliate Marketing, I have joined all the Australian ones and most are not that great.

I agree affiliate marketing is something which is not easy, a lot of people get burnt and blow 1000s. First you need a well priced traffic model. You then need offers to match this target market within the traffic model.

I think another issue with the AU market is most of the offers from Affiliates are not that great, you are forced to go to US providers who pay more and offer more support.

but overall thanks for the article.

I think most affiliate marketers who make good money have probably taken years to get where they are and are unwilling to simply give away that hard learnt information.

You have to wonder why those people that sell the "make $5000 a week from home instantly" sell that precious information? If the information really could make you $5000 a week why are they selling that information for $39.99 (which includes 30 useless 'extras') and not just doing it themselves?

Most "make $5000 a week from home instantly" marketers probably do make 5000$ a week by selling to the suckers, the supposed Info for only $39.95 /

    True.

Although I guess it should be pointed out that some (very few) of the "make $5000 a week from home (not instantly)" programs can sometimes, from what I can gather, offer some good information / guide lines. Usually in the form of a step by step how-to kind of guide on how to make money in affiliate marketing. And some even offer real coaching along the way. The catch is there is usually ALOT of hard work involved in their method and the better ones are generally quite expensive. The sales pitches are often good at making it sound all too easy but when it comes to actually putting in the hours people start to think its too hard and give up. The other thing is most of that information is freely available elsewhere just not in a nice step by step sort of way. The other thing is a lot of the sales pitches for these programs / guides give you alot of the information up front, just without the useful details which you can generally figure out for yourself with a bit of hard work or googling.

Having said all that, if you really want to make $5000 a day I will reveal my special secrets for only $19.95. This is a limited offer, there is only 20 positions left in my exclusive program so join today before I put the price up to $299. Plus you will receive an extra special bonus 25 affiliate marketing ebooks valued at over $5000! Click on the link below to start earning!

    Just kidding.. :D

Thank you! We made it ourselves and desperately tried to move away from those bland corporate videos and instead make it fun - which is what affiliate marketing should be - fun!

Thanks to everyone as well for participating in the conversation. I realise the article could go into a lot more but there's only so much you can say in 600 words.

We have always wondered ourselves how much of the money these "Guru's" make from practicing what they preach as opposed to telling others to practice what they preach. Anyone ever been to World Internet Summit? Now there's 2 days of shoddy get rich quick programs being hammered into you!

I recently bought a video from the Warrior forum. Still haven't finished it (really should do that) but I did find the parts I've watched quite informative and has given me a better perspective on a few avenues of business.
