On the basis of information I have, domainers (that includes some corporates who don't identify as domainers publicly but actually are) own about 5% to 10% of .au domains

That's quite interesting...
So given about 2 million AU domains have been registered you are saying about 100,000 - 200,000 are in the hands of domainers.
I would have thought that would have been a little on the low side to be honest given that there are a few big corporate players out there that have XX,XXX domains by themselves...

Chris there is no way of really knowing for sure, it is really a best guess on information available, it could be completely out, I think if anything, it may be understated

Yeah it'd be hard to know for sure.
That said, it looks like NetFleet has around 35,000 to 40,000 domains listed on their catalogue alone, and assuming that 90%+ of people that list their domains on NetFleet are really domainers,you'd have to be confident that the figure would be definitely be north of 100,000.
Also I don't know how many people here have their domains listed on NetFleet, but I'd be surprised if everyone listed all of their domains on NetFleet and it looks like DnTrade members would have at least 10,000 - 15,000 domains between them...
