how expiring domains work??

Hey guys, wondering if you could help me out....

I know about netfleet and how they sell domains names...etc...

but how do they obtain these names??
Is it when a domain host (like netregistry), have a domain name which is expired, then they SELL to domain name to "netfleet"???

how does the expired domain names work...???

(only because i want to snatch up a domain name, which has 1.5 weeks left of its grace period )

I'm not a seasoned player like a lot of the other members here (feel free to correct me/fill in the gaps ladies and gentlemen), but my understanding is that after the domain's grace period expires it drops back into public availability. This is where specialised drop catch service providers such as netfleet or drop (or some other private party running their own drop catch system) 'race' to be the first to catch the domain.

Domain registrars do not sell it to these services, they are all competing to be the first to catch it. Speculative auctions are held at netfleet and drop where you can bid on domain names and depending on which service catches the domain as it becomes publicly available again the highest bidder on the winning platform wins the domain.

So basically if you want the domain you could be competing against other bidders on netfleet's snapper, drop .com.au or someone else running their own system. If you anticipate that a name is going to be dropped you can always try and back order it, but it's too late to try that now if the one you want only has 1.5 weeks left in grace.

Another thing to take into account is the expiration periods for .au and gTLD domains as they are completely different.

A gTLD domain will generally enter into the following periods;

Expiration: 0-30 days — the domain can be renewed in this period with no penalties
Redemption: 0-55 days — the domain can be renewed in this period, but a redemption fee must be paid along with the renewal cost to do so (usually charges between US$200 – $300)
Deletion: 0-5 days — the domain cannot be renewed in this period. Once this period is complete, the domain will be released back to the public.

For .au domains – there is no redemption period. A domain can be renewed at no penalty for 30 days after the domain expires. On the 31st day, the domain will be release at 1pm (AEST)

thanks everyone for there input....

i now have a much better picture on how things work with domain names...
(its quite a different world!)

so i looked through netfleet and drop..read all there pages...


if the domain i want, is in the :

Status serverHold (Expired)
Status serverUpdateProhibited (Expired)

status....does this mean i CANT backorder it on netfleet??? and the only way i could get it is MANUALLY register it @ 1pm on that day, OR place a bid on netfleet/drop?????

it sounds weird....i could place a backorder on it ONE MONTH ago, when the status was normal, but cant now????
