Elliot Silver brings up an interesting approach on acquiring domain names.

On a related note, I know everyone has their own approach to buying and selling and the topic has come up before, but I'm interested in how people reply to anonymous email offers to buy a domain (a good name that is) for $20?
Here's the original thread (with some great examples):

Anyone have any other approaches or ways of finding out who's behind the random Hotmail or Gmail addresses? Or do you not care?
Cheers,
Chris
However, if they see that I am a domain investor, they might be more willing to let me buy it, knowing that I am probably not going to be able to directly compete with them. They may or may not realize that I will probably sell it down the road, but they aren’t dealing directly with a competing company that is going to put the name to good use.
