Is there any benefit to using hosting images?

Probably thinking more along the lines of a CDN or content delivery network. The images and static files are stored off site and cached to speed up loading times.
Sometimes people think that just embedding images that are hosted off site it will speed up your site, but it can often be slower because it needs to load from another site and may cause a delay in the load stack.
