Fairfax: Can you live in a domain name?

The Fairfax small business blog features an article today about Start-ups which specifically mentions buying a premium domain:

When Rebekah Campbell first thought of the idea for her start-up Posse.com, she was saving up a deposit for a house. She was so convinced about her new idea that she sunk her $28,000 deposit into buying the domain name.

"My mother was upset with me about that," says Campbell. "She had found me a house to buy and I told her: 'I can't buy it. I just bought a domain name.'"

The domain name, normally a very cheap purchase, was already owned by somebody else which made it much more expensive.
Her mother simply asked: "Can you live in a domain name?"

Shame it wasn't .au.. but still good :)

Great press for domains but the product itself seems next to useless. For a site that is Facebook only, almost 6k Likes seems very small for the amount of money going into the project. I wonder how many active users they have.

She's always been ahead of the tech game, for the music industry anyway. I remember getting evermores press release on a usb stick in like 2006

You'd be surprised. They have an "OK" API. Which I've implented on one of my sites, I did kill it after a while though cause it didn't turn out to be inline with my marketing.

Also they are flexible with APIs etc.

* Just had another look at the site. It's had a total revamp since I last looked at it about a year ago. I've actually got nfi what is going on their now.

btw, they also own the .com.au - which is interesting to note that she bought both.

The old Posse was awesome. I made around $900 in the space of about 3 months just using their affiliate links.

But now its completely different. It relaunched maybe 4 weeks ago. The (new) user interface in my opinion is crap.

I understand why she made the changes. But at the same time I think version 2 is an inferior/less exciting product. (I know its a bit early days...so time will tell.)

If anyone here likes reading about Entrepreneurial stuff, her blog is worth the read (especially if your in the music industry) - http://www.rebekahcampbell.com/. She is very open about her mistakes and I have personally learned a fair bit. Especially about pitching.

I'm out of the Music industry now, thank god. But still have a niche in entertainment. I agree, I really don't like what she is trying to do with the new version. Posse (original) had more potential, had she stayed within that niche but expanded it to something like mosh tix. there are enough genres in Australia to pick a few and concentrate on them.

I don't like the idea of playing with other peoples money. I rather make my own money so I don't owe anyone shit later.

Millions invested.
Only 1,196 people have signed up and used the App - how many are active users though.
To me it looks like Second Life.
