There was speculation(theres that word again)that this would be the big reveal from Facebook, and here it is.
The question is though, how reliable is the cow they are milking from? and who will it benefit? When just the mention of a specific product/brand can find you unwittingly spamming your friends home page with 'Jack likes Blah blah' even though you could be venting about how bad it is, where is its value?.
So should Google and the like be worried? While initially the FB search feature seems focused on items/brands and places (for direct marketing purposes I would think), I dont think that FB, at this stage, would be classed as any sort of search engine competition. More than likely they will be limited in use of their gathered data for marketing/research purposes rather than actual general search related queries which is what they will be ultimately focusing on.
