Drops today - Mar 2012

The perennial favourite utube.com.au is up again today.

I've lost count how many times this has been policy deleted.

And yes there are two bidders on it already ................

Maybe auDA should have a list of domains that cannot be registered. Like they used to with city names.

This would be a great candidate for that list.

Out of curiosity, what happens when you for bid and win a PD domain.
Does auDA take it from you, and you just loose the fee charged by the registrant?
Or, can you register it, retain it, but never use it ?
Just wondering why the same ones keep popping up.
Regards
Thomas.

It depends on the reason behind the PD. Some are deleted due to expired ABN or lack of eligibility etc. These can be snapped without much need for concern.

Some are obviously popping up regularly for reasons we should all stay away from.

Cant netfleet just blacklist this domain to stop people bidding.

I don't think Netfleet should try to start and assess eligibility for every bidder. Slippery slope imo

Btw looks like nf has a problem with the auction today so there could be some bargains at drop

I'd say they need to knock strikingly obvious names of the list, like this one. The end outcome is obvious (deletion and loss of money for the purchaser and a profit each time to drop houses) so the question is why are drop houses continuing to sell it over and over? Ok I don't really need to answer that question, we already know.

It is setting the buyer up in my view and drop houses should be partly accountable for it especially since they are the only party actually profiting from it.

Day before: "Here it is bid on it, its no.1 on our list", [chuckles in the back room], "another sucka!!"

1:05pm the next day: "Charge this guys card for it pronto and lets wait for the delete button...ha ha!"

I was more thinking:

- You have a customer who is new to the Netfleet platform, they see the big traffic from a domain such as utube.com.au and think it is a worthy buy.
Sure enough seasoned domainers will know to steer clear yet you have new buyer who has never been on the platform before, this new buyer then finds out that they name will be instantly taken and then they have wasted the reg fee + bid fee. It is more about new buyer awareness, training people who are new to the system, I mean if you turn away a new buyer that may be a lost customer for life.

That been said the current owner seems to be cashed up, so education and helping this owner to not make a mistake could intern create additional business right?

Oh snoopy - you haven't thought this through, have you?

It's obvious (to most people) that there's no black and white when it comes to domain infringment. If there was there would be no need for WIPO's, lawyers, auDA 'please explains' etc.

There is no such thing as 'strikingly obvious'. Even this domain could have perfectly legitimate registrants such as these guys http://www.abr.business.gov.au/SearchByName.aspx?SearchText=utube, these guys - www.utube.com or even these guys - Google.

hopefully that's a bit clearer for you? It's not the drop service's place to police domain registrations in any way. They are not resourced or qualified to do so and it's a slippery slope if they decided to try.

Well, that is a bit silly isn't it.

A modicum of consideration would mean you would have actually realised that the max price this domain has ever achived is $11. Less a $10 discount for first bidder = $1 (one dollar) plus reg fee revenue for Netfleet.

the only party actually profiting from it.

Apart from auDA, Ausregistry and the registrar.

I felt the same way as Snoopy initially, but it's a great point you make there David.

Netfleet and Drop both have markers for PD domains, so what about adding another little warning marker for domains that have been in PD more than three times or something?

I know it's not the drop catchers' responsibility to act as the domain police, but if new domainers (and you can only assume that's who they are) are buying these domains and getting burned each time, it could potentially be putting them off the industry.

Perhaps when people hover over the new warning icon it could give them a message about the name previously being PD'ed many times, and direct them towards DNT so they can be enlightened on how to play this game properly! :p

Yeah those are some good practical ideas. - What do you think NF & Drop?

I really don't think it's a big issue though. This single domain seems to be the only serial offender and if a new domainer ends up burning $50 every couple of weeks, sobeit. Sometimes, no matter how much advice they are given, people have to actually make the mistakes to learn from them.

Where is the line drawn? nobody has stopped adding an "s" to the end of a domain name ! would www.youtubeS.com.au be banned? but ballinaplumber.com.au vs ballinaplumberS.com.au are not ?

isn't utube far enough away from youtube to be safe?

i'm not stating an opinion here, i'm just wishing to learn.

PS: utube.com is registered and active even though it is a S^%T scam website , why are we holding ourselves back in AU's ? on one hand we say "first in first served" and the other hand is saying " we have rules...... but we change them when ever we feel like it...." ????

utube

It should be OK if you wanted to promote a pipe bending business

good point acheeva and i hadn't realise i had actually gave plumbing as an example ( my other mind must have done it) so ballinadentist .... just so we get off the tube/plumbing reason.

what i am saying is that youtube.com is NOT australian so why can't anyone here take advantage of that? if youtube want to protect their worldwide internet property then GO DO IT,

i really hate giving this example but HONEST it was my brother inlaw that gave the link to me !!!! LOL

www.youporn.com ( make sure you have your anti virus turned on)

and someone in australia has created www.youporn.com.au ,

my point is ....where is the line drawn?

you can't tell me this isn't a direct rip off of youtube ?
