I know this topic always comes up every now and then, but I thought I'd check if I could find anything new or interesting that might help sellers with their own landing pages.

Landing pages are a big deal and the broader topic of landing page optimisation is something you'll find being discussed with most online marketing campaigns regardless of where the traffic is coming from. For this article however, we're focusing on domain sales landing pages.

This article was inspired by a post by Elliot Silver where he was commenting on a landing page he liked. Here's a screenshot of the example domain below, http://www.changoo.com/.

A landing page (also called a "lander") is a single web page that is targeted for a specific purpose, usually with one very clear call to action. Most landing pages don't include all the navigation and other links that could distract a visitor. Below we have a typical example of a landing page. The image on the left is the companies home page, the one of the right is a landing page for a Google AdWords campaign for credit card offers.

So why does all this matter if you're selling a domain? It matters because if you're selling to an end user the first thing a potential buyer will do is type your domain name into their browser (called direct navigation) to see if it's available. Giving them a really easy way to purchase your domain increases your chances of a sale.

"I'm covered", I hear you say, "I park my domains". All good parking companies have been using "for sale" options for years now but not all parked pages would be considered ideal landing pages. The difference between a parked page and a for sale landing page is that most parking pages will focus on pay per click ads, with a small "enquire about this domain" or "this domain may be for sale". This isn't always the case, there are plenty of hybrid parking/landing pages such as the domain below, consult your own parking providers for information on what they offer.

If you want to set up your own parking pages, you have lots of options ranging from manually creating pages, coming up with some clever scripting or using something like WordPress Multisite and the Domain Mapping plugin (note you will need a dedicated IP address for this to work, this costs a little extra). Here are the instructions to get the domain mapping plugin working. Once you have this setup, you can create an unlimited number of sites on the one account, all based off a single WordPress instance. An example of this in practice is DomainMarket.com, here is a discussion on the topic.

If you do choose to go down the DIY path, here are some resources to get you started.

TIP: If you do switch from parking and create your own landing pages, make sure you're using some form of tracking analytics, something parking companies are doing for you when you use their service.

I came across this one on Github, it's free and looks very flexible.

The web template marketplace ThemeForest has a growing selection of landing page templates, most of them are highly configurable and offer lots of bells and whistles.

Some of the features you'll find with these include:

    • Analytics charts
    • Anti-spam contact form
    • Mobile friendly
    • Translations
    • Domain stats (links, rankings etc.)

Here are links to the individual templates with some screenshots:

The grand daddy of landing page resources online is Unbounce, they offer a landing page hosting and analytics service - but they also have an extensive selection of resources that will blow you away, if you're into landing page optimisation that is ;)

Here are a few tips from Unbounce to get you going, but I'd recommend taking some time out to read some of the great material they have on their site.

    http://unbounce.com/101-landing-page-optimization-tips/

I'd also recommend checking out this old post on DNTrade about the perfect landing page https://www.dntrade.com.au/resources-success-stories/4684-perfect-landing-page.html.

But you want more? Well, there's also a book on the topic and a list of the 23 best landing page articles at the Crazy Egg blog.

And to finish on something very cool, if you're looking for really nice examples, Dawid Liberadzki and Konrad Księżopolski have put together an online landing page gallery called http://land-book.com/, it's well worth a visit :)

I hope this gets your creative juices flowing. If you have any good examples or insights you can share from your own experiences, please post them below.

    Cheers,
    Chris

P.S. This article is very link heavy, but please note that none of them are affiliate links. I've only included what I thought would be useful.

He wants a 5% commission for people using it?? Don't think he'll get too many takers for that.

Not sure how things work for .com.au but for most extensions the main thing people could do would be list on Afternic. The best way of improving sales is to get the name at the "first port of call" which is having it listed (and easily buyable) when people do a search at registrars (godaddy in particular).

For landers design I think it would need a lot of testing and a lot of domains/inquiries to test with, might just be better to use something like domainnamesales rather than trying to reinvent the wheel.

For my .coms I just forward the name to the sales listing
