What is the general rule now days for registering a .com domain. Do you still protect it by also registering the .net, .org extensions?

I would say no to that, org, not likely to be associated, .net, values seem to be dropping significantly and the question is do you ever search for a .net (direct navigation?) I would rather have the .com and the matching cctld all day long

On another note, i had to log off to try and find this thread as it did not show up on recent posts ???? Happens a lot lately

i don't own many .net.au and i don't own many .com
but i only register the .net.au of a .com.au i own IF IT IS a bloody good domain, 99% i do not bother
LOL, that means 99% of my domains are sh*t LOL
but you get the point
as for .info, .biz etc well you just get into the discussion of lower level extension which can go on for everrrrrrrr
if i owned dentist.com then i would be buying almost everything but newyorkdentist i wouldn't bother............ maybe the .net

Does that include .info .biz and .com.au and .net.au?
For my .com sites, I only get the .com.au if it's appropriate to do so and a lot of the time it's not necessary for a global site. It's also often the case that the term is long gone in most extensions, so unless I'm looking to spend a lot of cash, I'm just happy to have the .com.

For my .com.au I very, very rarely get the .net.au (and for my better domains it's already taken in .net.au anyway). I own 2 .net.au in total from memory.

Stuff like .info, .biz, .me, etc - I don't bother with at all.

The most effective brand protection is owning the best domain for that brand and target market (e.g. .com.au for Australian businesses, .com for global) and having appropriate trademarks.

If it's a global site with a .com do you using a hosting service outside of Australia and if so does it make much difference in International traffic?

Use a host near the target audience to reduce user latency is the general rule of thumb.

If you a domainer you are better of having someone else own the .net or .org etc. If anything ever happens to those domains you've got a potential buyer plus an increase in traffic. As far as developing sites I think some (minority) still bother with variants. Think it is a huge waste of money personally. What exactly is being protected? I doesn't protect anything, there is hundreds of extensions a competitor could use and if they do use an alternative you'll gain from it, not lose from it.

Who would ever visit the .net.au site though? And why would anyone pay for the .net.au to put a porn site on it unless the site was enormous?

of course i'm not talking about dubbodentist, but if you do have a good domain with traffic then you have competitors, even though most of us agree .net.au is a waste ...... myself included... i'd still like to protect my "backyard"
pron site was an analogy, it meant if you don't have it someone else can and do what they like.

What are they going to do that is going to effect you in a negative way though? If they build a site on a .net.au, surely that is going to be good for you overall?
