Canadian Domain Names

I saw an interesting news release - the .ca extension has just turned 25 years old.

http://www.cira.ca/news/news-releases/25-years-of-ca/

There are a few similarities with Australia:

  • Population of Canada is about 34 million - Australia nearly 24 million

  • Both countries are members of the Commonwealth.

  • Domains registered: Canada 1,926,000 +/- ; Australia 2,424,000 +/-

  • Restrictions on ownership. (Though I note the Queen is allowed to register a Canadian domain name - I wonder if that applies in Australia!) http://www.cira.ca/assets/Documents/Legal/Registrants/CPR.pdf

Other than that, I profess to know next to nothing on values or any other thing in relation to Canadian names!

Can anyone share anything else?

An online friend in the USA alerted me to this link about Canadian domain names. With his kind permission I reprint it here:

Canada Business Network - Government Services for Entrepreneurs

http://www.canadabusiness.ca/eng/page/3453/

And my friend pointed out this particular paragraph:

What if the name I want is being used by someone else?

If you have not been successful at finding an appropriate domain name that is not in use, you may want to consider purchasing an existing name. Many desirable domain names are already in use or have been purchased by resellers who are willing to negotiate a price for the rights to the name. There are several ways to purchase an existing name: by private sale, by auction, or through a domain name broker.

Nice! :)
