Becoming a Registrar...

Has anyone seriously looked into this and/or are there any existing registrars on the board?

I was reading through the info at http://www.auda.org.au/registrars/accreditation/, and it seems like it would cost a minimum of 15k (including the 'starting balance' at ausregistry).

Anyone know what kind of technical skills are required? Do you have to set up your own servers etc?

I had looked at that too cycloptik, the money didn't sound like a speed hump, but the technical knowledge was the only thing stopping me. I don't know whats involved, but would definitely be interested in starting a registrar. I would definitely work on customer support and usability of the domain management software.

AusRegistry use EEP protocol for registry-registrar communication, although they have a web-based interface but its performance is poor.

You can pay for something like this: http://eppclient.com/web-client/

Otherwise you'll have to develop your own registrar system.

I haven't found a registrar in Australia offering good bulk domain management. Most of the services are still very consumer oriented. We need a registrar for domainers. I think there is a market. Fabulous.com might do a good job if they choose to become auDa accredited. :)

We have two, running two completely different platforms.

You'll need atleast one dedicated box, a developer (EPP documentation is terrible) and a sys admin to get a system up and going. Unless you want to do everything manually... but there would be no point in doing that when trying to sell domains to domainers!
