Available Names

Last week I made a post on my blog titled "Are All The Good Domains Gone?", my opinion is .au still has a lot of great names available for reg fee, the kind of names that have traffic and would monetise.

In my post I suggested 4 names that were still available and were worth registering, 1 week and 32 domainers later the 4 names are still available.

What are your thoughts?

Are these 4 names worth anything?

planefares.com.au
tourismcolleges.com.au
childcarecareer.com.au
samedayloans.com.au

I know several dntrade users read my blog, what stopped you from registering these names?

Which categories would you like me to focus on the next time I post some available names?

as you have stated before , many names still available , tourismcolleges doesn't work for me , do we have tourism colleges ? if the singular tourismcollege ... well that has a nice ring to it , people may be doing the geo thing mostly at the moment i feel ???

I mostly buy names with low quantity, high value traffic. All 4 names are in categories with high paying keywords and the keyword combinations are ones people are searching for.

These names are similar to many others in my portfolio and would monetise well, I think if they dont get registered soon I will register them myself and then do a few follow up articles showing their traffic and earnings.

Tourismcollege.com.au is already registered, and this would actually increase the likelihood of typeins for tourismcolleges.com.au

Just something to think about, if these names were actually good enough to register, is there any reason you haven't registered them and monetised them? If they arent good enough for you to register, what would make them good enough for anyone else to register?

Good question soj - before I answer though, I have gone ahead and registered all 4 names as of yesterday and I will be posting traffic/income results on my blog. I was hoping one of my readers would register them but it was not to be..

Back to your question, I have several thousand .au names, and a fairly good nose for which ones can pay their own way. Those 4 names should at the very least make back the reg fee and most probably a bit extra. I know its unusual to get something for nothing these days, but I am looking to give my blog readers some value when they come to my site. Including the opportunity to buy good names at reg fee.

I will offer some names up again in a month or so and see what happens. Im hoping if these 4 are profitable I will be able to show my readers that they can trust my reccommendations.

Ultimately, the money I could make from those 4 names is potentially $200 profit over a 2yr period, possibly more if I found an end user to buy them, but thats less likely.

As my blog is still new, attracting new readers and giving them valid reasons to return is worth more than those 4 domains would earn.

As no one registered those names, I am hoping that posting the stats for those names will also prove valualbe to my readers.

Ill be looking forward to you posting those stats. I myself wouldn't have registered them based on the fact that they are areas which don't really interest me, thus making it a lot harder for me to develop sites and monetise. I understand completely where your coming with though about giving your readers valuable and rewarding information, though youll earn trust and respect from readers over the long run, a blog only a few weeks old wont give you much pull online. Though after a good reading of quality content, youll have dedicated readers and those domains will be gone seconds after you post them. I wish you luck on future domain recommendations and ill sure to be keeping an eye on some which may interest me :)

Thanks for the advice soj, still early days for my blog. If you have some categories you'd like me to explore for available names let me know and I will keep it in mind for next time.

Monetisation through development would not be my reccommended approach for these domains, they have income potential from parking, and could be sold as part of a traffic portfolio.

I also have a lot of domains I intend to develop, however I believe it is crucial that domains pay their way, otherwise a large portfolio would be uneconomical.

Theres been a little bit of a lull on your blog Wade, looking forward to reading more of your posts :)

Thanks for nudge soj, I'm still here, just been busy and suffering from writers block doesnt help. I will have some new posts up soon :)

Thanks wade, they were a good read. I had also looked at those geo city domain names and wondered why they weren't developed properly. Hence starting the SeeMelbourne project. Also looking forward to your future posts regarding "available names".

Thanks, I'll post results for the first 4 domains at the end of August, they are low volume and need time to show any results worth discussing.

Sometime in the next few weeks I'll post another batch of available names for everyone to have a look over, this time I will try to find 10-20 to make things more interesting.

Looking further into it

Interesting thread. I thought samedayloans sounded OK. But it gets hardly any traffic, "pay day loans" + "paydayloans" are 50x more popular. So I registered www.paydayloans.net.au

So... What tools do you use to determine popularity of terms and how big do you think the discount is between a .net.au and a .com.au? 10x? 20x? Any evidence?!

Hello Wade,

I wouldn't have purchased any but that's not because I think they're bad.

I think there are lots of different strategies among domainers that influence purchasing, price, etc. For instance, I tend to focus on domains that I would consider developing myself and have a basic plan for. I rarely buy just to flip the domain or resell. A favourite of mine is the tourism industry as I have a few in that area already.
