As one might have predicted there are already some implementation issues for the new extension.

From Synergy Wholesale:

Once a .au direct domain name has been registered, the name will not be live immediately. You will be able to edit the DNS records on the domain through Synergy Wholesale, however, the DNS will not be synced to the registry until Afilias adds them manually. Once it is manually added, your website will be able to resolve as normal.

Afilias will perform these actions once a day, Tuesday to Friday each week, which means you could have to wait a few days until your DNS records become active on the domain name.

Might be time for a new tender.

I'm sure there are some Australian companies that would do a better job.
