Online retailer Kogan has implemented the world's first Internet Explorer 7 "tax" today, charging customers who use the browser more for their online technology purchases.

The new 6.8% charge comes into effect today on all products purchased from Kogan for any Australian shoppers still using IE7.

As it turns out, developers say it's more costly than you'd think.

Mark Scarrott, of Sydney web firm Design Identity, says making a website compatible for IE7 takes as much as 5-10% of the entire coding time.

"It does depend on the website, but I think you could say an extra 10% of development, or about 5% of web coding, needs to be added to the coding time," Scarrott says.

Interesting move.. Kogan is another one who has mastered the art of free PR. IE7 is a fair pain for CSS. It's the lowest version of IE I support (generally) and even then I don't go to great lengths to add all the "extra trimmings".

What does everyone else think of this?

This could be a very good way of targeting the less savvy customers with higher prices, ie people less likely to shop around to find the very lowest price possible may well be people who use internet explorer.

Not so much as a tax but this article shows other companies do similar things depending on what OS you're using.
