Spotted this story and thought it worth sharing.
Although I've seen Court based penalties before, this appears to be the first extrajudicial/non Court based penalty for registering a domain name that I can see/remember...
As privacy and data monitoring seems to be in the Australian news lately..interesting to read how the UK Police are getting proxy "operators" to volunteer to transfer their domain names away.

My point is all about lowering the perceived "value" of the extension.
The .net.au has always been a slow extension.
IMO- If ausreg and auda wanted to really push some new registrations in .au, they could help open up the top level of .au and...
Personally..I think the $1 idea blows. Devalues the .net.au brand of any worth it had. Take a look at what happens when domains are given away at stupid prices..
