This made me think of APL (Australian Poker League). But they use PlayAPL.com, they once had the .com.au but let it go. So I can't see them being an end user looking for this anyway.

I have to disagree here. In my many years of I.T. Support, I've never seen anyone use that in a search. So I would actually say it is uncommon. Maybe not as uncommon in your circle, but uncommon to the everyday Googler.
