Can a .com.au domain name be used for defense purposes or must there be content?

Imagine you own a domain name such as exampledomain.com, and had registered exampledomain.com.au to simply stop somebody else offering services under this name, however the com.au is simply a defence, with no content, doesn't even resolve.

Is this OK under AUDA policy? The more I read forum posts I get worried.

As a rule if the domain does not resolve then you want the eligibility details to prove your connection to the domain for you.

If your company was "Example Domain Pty Ltd" then your registration of exampledomain.com.au would contain "Example Domain Pty Ltd" in the eligibility and that would be enough for auDA. Your domain can remain inactive.

If your company was actually Widgets Pty Ltd but you had a trademark on the term "Example Domain" then you would make your whois
Registrant: Widgets Pty Ltd
Eligibility: Example Domain (TM) 1234567
Once again the trademark in the Eligibility would be enough for auDA and your domain can remain inactive.

If your company was called Widgets Pty Ltd and you only had a product "Example Domain" but no trademark then you may find yourself being asked by auDA to prove your connection to the domain name by actually adding some content which needs to be relevant (this is called a WARRANTY CHECK) in this scenario you would need to make the domain active and add a working website to show auDA.

This obviously only applies to defensive registrations... good generic domains are better off being monetised in order to meet eligibility.
