Mobile phone chewing data

i recently switch phones to optus and also got a new win10 laptop, instantly my data usage increased?
samsung said " not us" optus said " not us" !! its been going on for months with me exceeding my package adding @ $50 a month to my bill which to me is BS as i never have before.
i have been on the phone to them all, been into the shops and still my phone uses data in SPIKES.
FINALLY, yesterday i stopped at a samsung promo store at my shopping centre and ONCE again they said "its optus" until a samsung guy butted in and said " tell me what exactly happens.
so i say ...look at the usage !

turns out my laptop when i hotspot it downloads the windows upgrades !!!!!, but doesn't when i am on unlimited at home????
turns out i can't stop my phone doign this, i have to stop the computer !!!

turns out win10 ( normal not pro) doesn't support turning it off !!!!, so at this moment if i go out i have to force updates at home and hope no new updates happen whilst i hotspot.

personally i blame auda for making me go into the city so often ( thats a JOKE people )

anyway, i just thought i'd post if you are having issues ORRRRRRRR if you have a solution other then the obvious upgrade to pro.

Try the www.whirlpool.com.au forum and they can help you with more phone and data related stuff.

As far as I know in Windows 10 there is no way to prevent this as it doesn't know the difference between a mobile hot spot or your home wifi (since it just sees it as any other wifi connection).

There MAY be a way to classify the hotspot as a metered connection which may stop Windows Update from using it, but the best advice will be on the Whirlpool forums at www.whirlpool.net.au (Sean's link is to the appliance maker ).

Oh this higlights a great issue who should get proposed competing extra .au extension

Who should get Whirlpool.au ? The owners of www.Whirlpool.net.au or www.Whirlpool.com.au ? Does the owners and management of www.whirlpool.com.au even know about the extra propsed .au extension whcih may compete against them?

Why did auDA not send an email to both whirlpool.net.au and whirlpool.com.au registrants and provide them the chance to participate in surveys and submissions?

This is a prime example of a potential minefield and litigation about the poor management and processes of the proposed competing .,au extension.

ok, whirlpool gave me the answer I HOPE, i have to set the COMPUTER to metered connection on the selected connection thus my mobile.
here's how i did it:
------------------
hotspot your computer first

settings> network & internet > wifi > then mange known networks on that screen > click on your mobile and hit properties > down the bottom is metered.
