Yesterday I got approached to do an interview on 2GB with Ross Greenwood about the auDA situation. I couldn't participate because I was about to fly to Sydney. They chased me up again today, and I put them in touch with Josh Rowe (because I was still travelling).

The interview will happen with Josh shortly. You can listen live here; or the podcast will be available tomorrow.

Under the current auDA member code of conduct I may be booted for that interview !!!

Let them try! It is now very clear why some people pushed through the change of the COC to try and mute members.

Nothing wrong with calling for better accountability, better transparency, less conflicts if interest, following domain name industry best practices, listening to members and giving members the right to vote on issues etc

Interesting read…

As approved by the Board of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, September 2005.
Corporate Governance Handbook
Page 32.

A Board Member must not allow personal interests, or the interest of any associated person, to conflict with the interest of the organisation. (AKA. reputational advancement, KPI's...)

You can read it here;
https://www.dss.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/05_2012/gov_handbook_2010.pdf

A can of worms if opened?

Corporate Governance Handbook for Company Directors and Committee Members
Page 2
“There is a push for greater accountability by NFPs from governments and the community. Business and other major donors increasingly want evidence of the effectiveness of the activities, and prefer NFPs that can provide robust business cases for the investments they seek…Most NFPs agree that significant financial support warrants accountability (such as audited accounts and business plans) and demonstrable results.”

In the famous words of the Cameron Ralph-Report (Page 8)
"The membership act as a proxy accountability mechanism for the participant, community and national interest".

Damn mechanism's got a good old fashion work out!

Its opened.

A Code of Conduct for Board members will be developed as part of the next phase of governance work and members will have the opportunity to provide input prior to any final decisions.

Didn't they have a CoC for Board members already? That would be strange? "Do as I say not as I do?"

My initial take on the "Board Communique" from yesterday is on Domainer.

To me, there is supreme irony in what we (as members) have been able to achieve. We would have settled for less had they (auDA) been prepared to listen to us in the first place - and the ex-Chair would probably still have had his job!

At least my favourite cartoon has come to life. :)

The Australian Financial Review (AFR) picked up on the S249D meeting as well. Excellent article by Myriam Robin today.

Loved this excerpt:

"The meeting went on, though one of the resolutions was no longer necessary and some people were unable to dial in due to a technically difficulty with the webinar software (which is rather ironic given the technical expertise in that room). Boardman tried to regain control of the situation, sitting those present through a long explanation of auDA's strategy. Perhaps he figured a recap of why he was changing things would de-escalate things, but it didn't really work. If anything, members saw red at what appeared to them to be management trying to derail a meeting called for the express purpose of voting on their resolutions."

Cameron Boardman responds on Radio 2GB with a typical politician's response.

If you're reading this Cameron, members are "tired of spin" - or haven't you got that message yet?
