A recent observation - my clients are starting to allow their newTLD domains to expire.
These are typically small businesses who have registered domains mostly for brand protection. I didn't encourage them to register these domains - they were either registered directly or they initiated the request that I register them on their behalf.
I think they've come to realise there's no real value in most of them - too generic / doesn't really add value, and when their renewal price is typically between $50 - $100 per year per domain (much more in some cases) - the costs add up quickly, which makes it difficult to justify when the value is questionable.
