i was told today by netvirtue that cpanel have done a deal with comodo to provide free ssl for every account ! i recently purchased an ssl and they have today refunded it as i purchased almost the same time as this was instigated.

each host has to instigate it, it doesn't just happen.

but now ALL my sites are showing https without me doing anything and as i create another within 48 hours it kicks in.

you should ask your host about this , i think its called "free auto ssl "

Just a few days ago, a company I work with opened up a free medium.com account with a personal domain for their blog. Medium provided a free SSL from comodo. I was wondering how Medium could afford an SSL for each free client. This explains it.

We needed to create a long string CNAME in our DNS (which I guess CPanel does for you with their AutoSSL plugin if your domain and DNS are on the same server) which pointed to a long string comodo.com domain and within 24 hours the SSL was loaded.

You can check out the free SSL we received: https://blog.opencities.com/

I usually just buy from SSLs.com as they are cheap as chips really. Never had any issues.

I've tried the letsencrypt https://letsencrypt.org/ ssl, but it doesn't work on my shared hosting, if i was on a vps then i could install the dependencies. But apparenlty its only got a 90 shelf life, even the one from comodo has a similar lifespan, https://ssl.comodo.com/free-ssl-certificate.php

I believe the ones with cPanel AutoSSL are a yearly rego and not the 90-day trial, they also auto renew. Well, the free one we received from Medium is certainly a yearly rego.

Good to know Tim. It certainly is a global need, particularly now that google penguin is applied to each and every search the ssl ranking factor now will come into play. And @johno69 I use https://www.thesslstore.com/ for certs.

To clarify this one, It's a 90 day certificate, but it'll auto renew just before that expiry indefinitely.
This is the new cPanel / WHM feature called AutoSSL which we've enabled fleetwide: https://blog.cpanel.com/autossl/
We've opted for the Comodo option instead of LetsEncrypt as it allows for more SSL's per vhost.

This is great, all round, 90 days autorenew, is actually better in my eyes from a security standpoint, if a vulnerability is discovered the the current ssl standard, a new issue of cert can be rolled out to the network sooner.
