wondering how they are allowed to operate considering Applie's trademark guidelines:

.. is it possible to run an affiliate site using a trademark in the domain or is this generally a no go zone even if you are marketing the trademark owners products?

Those are Apple's TM guidelines - not the law. They are known to be very strong on TM protection though - even to the detriment of their product IMO.

Respondants have won in WIPOs where they are selling the complainant's TM product even without authorisation to use the TM in a domain name. Mind you I wouldn't basev a business around the domain due to the risk
