Smile Top hosting companies

I did some interview with some hosting interviews, you can read them here

www.tophostingcompanies.com.au

It's not 100% perfect, work in progress, but you may find some info interesting.

In you interviews did you happen to find the best value hosting company offering Windows with classic ASP running and MSSQL database (Microsoft SQL server) - NOT MYSQL?

Not sure if you are still after this info, but I had reason to look into this myself recently, as it was an area i'm not familiar with (I usually use LAMP based hosting).

For Aussie hosts, I would recommend www.studiocoast.com.au . Haven't been with them long but they are very good so far, excellent support and logical setup. There are a number of others to avoid in this space, but I won't publish names here as I don't want to bad mouth anyone, but do be careful who you pick as this sort of hosting is at least as fraught with danger as other types, despite the generally higher prices!

marketingweb. "who you pick as this sort of hosting is at least as fraught with danger"

luckily i haven't had to many trouble but i did move to a host provider PRIOR to hosgator and found their system INCREDIBLY difficult.

The reason most likely was with me, i just didn't get a grip on how their system worked as i was using Cpanel for a long time and they didn't, basically it cost me $300 as i had to pay a year up front and they wouldn't refund my money even though i didn't use there system for very long.

I'm NOT going to name them so don't PM me, i thikn they have a great service but it wasn't right for ME.

the answer is give a little bit of money to try whoever out and then invest as hosting alot of sites is time consuming.

Hi Tim,

I wasn't referring to hosting in general, and I don't use studiocoast for my main host. I was just answering the question about a good Microsoft based host - which my recent search (on behalf of a particular project) tells me are few and far between in Australia. We were actually signed up for another one and had to give up in disgust they were so bad.

Re your point about cpanel vs not, I know what you mean. I had occasion to use a hosting account from ziphosting for one particular project, chosen only because at this stage I use them for domain registration. I was very surprised to see they don't use cpanel at all, nor an apache server - rather it's a Zeus server with some strange and difficult front end. Apparently the whole netregistry group is on this (with the possible exception of tpp wholesale, not sure about that). I found it to be a pain in the ass, particularly when trying to set up a .htaccess file, which doesn't exist on a Zeus server except as a sort of emulation thing.

Moral of the story - if you like cpanel, don't presume your new host has it when changing - ASK first!

RE: cpanel

I move quickly on most things and change is good, but REALLY getting to know something is often better, i'm lucky having helena as we have split our roles, i handle photoshop, dreamweaver, wp, cpanel, domains and keeping the laptops running smooth

helena handles quickbooks, official emails, photoshop, illustrator, design concepts

the moral is : you can only know so much so make your life as easy as possible by sticking with systems.

Something has to be significantly better before i change.

I'm confused... you wanted good hosting companies but you didn't bother coming to us?

That's a slap in the face.
