I can`t even find a reference on the auDA pages.

Means it will drop next business day or today if no drop has happened yet.

Generally once a drop has happened then the registry updates the status of the domains in their database.

I don't think that is possible unless its over a weekend.

If you are doing a whois lookup on au domains then you should do it through ausregistry http://www.ausregistry.com.au/whois.php as their data is current. If you do it through other whois then their data may be cached.

I think you may also need a direct link to the registry otherwise you have no chance.

is it a PD or CD? Don't they sit with that status for a while..?

There is slim to no chance you will beat the drop services trying to reg it.
