Hey Sway! Do you mind if I ask why you think buying .net.au is a good idea? (Other than the notable price difference?) I personally dislike .net.au's because they never seem to rank. So if it doesn't rank, then we need to rely on direct traffic. In which case the average user is far less familiar with the .net.au as oppose to .com or .com.au. If your experience has told you otherwise, I would love to know. Cheers for the help. |

Yeah, you are right Smile
Nobody is ever going to want generic .net.au Google will always discriminate against them, no matter what site or what SEO They are absolutely worthless Nobody is ever going to pay to buy a .net.au The general public has never heard of .net.au What ever you do , do NOT register any generic .net.au I remember saying exactly the same thing about LLL.com some years ago

The reason its a good idea is simple, 'You Can Get Better Names' which are much more brandable. Of course much like global domains the equivalent '.com.au' will always be the preferred extension over the .net.au but it doesn't mean that 'ALL' .com.au's are better than .net.au's. For example which domain do you think is better, 'wesellslippers.com.au' or 'slippers.net.au'? Think back when people were signing up for things like hotmail, gmail and myspace. Remember if your desired username wasn't available it would usually suggest another one with numbers after it. This became a joke, you would have johnsmith1, johnsmith2, johnsmith367262452 etc... which simply became way too difficult to remember so you would have to write it down if you intended on using it in the future. Much like this, if you're promoting a website you want people to be able to remember it, not have to write it down. Sure by having a .net.au you may lose some traffic to the .com.au version for those people who are 'trained' to add that to domains but do you really think mybusiness3637673.com.au is going to fair any better? Overall the discussion about '.net.au' not ranking is rubbish if you ask me as I have had recent success with a few hand regg'ed .net.au's. The reason they aren't showing so much in search results is to do more with the lack of development going into them than the actual Search Engine algorithm. Quote:

I have a few .net.au's which rank fairly well. I'd say that there's a bit more work involved and you're purely looking at seo or paid traffic - what i'd call 'click traffic'.
