Ah that's a shame. Would have made a great story - catch a domain on the drops for $2K, flog it a few days later for 5 figures (6 figures?!) to a $1.1B end user! Now that's a return that would get non-domainers interested!

Comparing these two clearly has merit if we are discussing relative valuations between aftermarket and drops.

Same industry
Printers.com.au is product/service focused (easier to make money from)
Printing.com.au is industry focused
Printers.com.au has three times the search volume
Printers.com.au appeared to be valued at about half that of printing.com.au

To me, at least, that doesn't really make sense....
Printers.com.au would be aiming at all the $80 printers out there that you need to throw away after one use because the replacement cartridge costs you $100.

Printing would be all the Business Cards, Flyers, Letterheads, etc that businesses would be using. A much bigger industry, therefore a higher price for the domain IMO.

These are two entirely different industries.

Personally I think there is very low margins in computer hardware. People will use comparison shopping to save $5 on a $300 item. I wouldn't want to be in that industry myself, it reached saturation along time ago, holding inventory is expensive and needs to be nightly managed (due to products going out of date), I think also there is large barriers to entry in terms of it needing volume discounts to get reasonable profit margins.

In regards to printing there is a value add as opposed to selling something where all people care about is price. I'm not sure which is the bigger industry but I know which one I'd prefer to be in if I were running a small or medium sized business.

Fair points guys. Remember though people searching for 'printers' might be looking for printing companies as well as the hardware.

In fact if you search for 'printers' the ads are dominated by printing companies offering printing services (rather than hardware for sale) so obviously people do do that.

I guess the question is what proportion of the 40,000 searche a month are looking for printing services compared with hardware printers. Something that's very hard to tell...

If you try printers and printer in the adwords tool you'll see all the two word combinations with those terms in them mostly relate to selling printers (95%+), so it is a fair bet that is what most of the searches for the word/s individually relate to that.

When I type "printers" into google itself most of the ads relate to computer hardware, 7 out of 11. Of the other 4, 3/4 are in the bottom 4 positions in adwords.
