Very interesting article. In the few days we have been in Fortitude Valley I've seen a few examples of entertainment venues actively promoting their Facebook and Twitter addresses over their own domains. Craziness.

Great article.
I've been preaching something similar for a long time now. All it will take is for one or the other (or both) to start charging users or bombarding with advertisements and that whole market will fall apart. While we have a very active presence on both Twitter and Facebook, our Community Forums is a much bigger hub or corporate communication and support, in an environment that we have complete control over.

It is a bit like a beer company telling you beer tastes better than wine.
In my view it may well make a lot of sense for a company to promote a Facebook page or Twitter account, especially those in the entertainment industry where it is all about spreading the latest news. I don't really think companies are using it for "navigational" purposes. Trying telling the average 18 year old that the best way to keep up with their favourite band or nightclub venue is by checking their home page regularly or signing up for their email list.

It will always be a case of different strokes for different folks. It's all about where the ROI is. For some businesses it will be getting people to their sales funnel of a website for others it will be winning mindshare via facebook. |
