Luxembourg has opened up the .LU ccTLD to general Registration.

Although not many Aussies will probably buy any, the decision to release is further evidence that .Au should possibly benefit from a general release.

Luxembourg had a policy that was not unlike that of auDA present policy.

2 Questions.

1/ Are you planning to buy any .LU ?

2/ Do you think auDA should do similar?

I'm probably not planning to buy any .lu domains personally as I wouldn't know what to do with them, but I think the info is worth knowing - thanks.

Re opening up .au space - I DO NOT think that AUDA should remove the business name / ABN requirement - all this would do in my opinion would be to have people all over the world purchasing all the .au domain names. This may seem good on the surface (more players in the market), but would also make it harder for small business to actually get a reasonable name, and would perhaps make our little hobby out of our own price range to some degree. Basically what i'm saying is I LIKE that fact the Aussie market is pretty much just for Aussies.

In a case like Luxenbourg, they will make more money from domain registrations, but it will make it much harder for any small business in the country to find a suitable domain name.

That said, what I believe they should do is make TRANSFER fees very cheap - which would allow more trade. I think the concept of the transfer fees is keeping the market back much more than having to have a ABN (or similar option).

.lu is just another way for domainers to spend their hard earned , at this point i prefer .com.au to to be the mainstay otherwise our domains become less of less value

I don't think that auDA should open up the space by removing the business name / ABN requirement. This would increase the number of "domainers"/"speculators" - anybody/anywhere in the world, could register .au domains then.

Thus increasing our competition without increasing the serious, end user, after market.
Anyway just my humble opinion.

I totally agree with retaining the Australian & business ownership rules.

Although the "Australian" only provision is misleading, as any foreigner can start an Australian business and obtain their own ACN.

Our market is far the small to let everyone in, its bad enough as it is getting a good domain name.

It's good to see that majority of us would be against it open to anyone.

True, but most international domainers wouldn't bother.
Only corporates looking to expand to aus.

Opening it up would lead to more high end sales of aftermarket domains.

That would be a positive side.

I doubt that, but maybe very slightly, however thats just my opinion.

i was approached at namepros by a dude that 'needed' a .com.au and he asked if i would be his agent and in return he would be my agent for .fr domains, i declined the offer
