I had also wondered about auto manufacturers - you see a lot of cars these days that supposedly are incredibly intelligent and think for themselves e.g. automatically brake if you get too close to another car.

I think artificial intelligence is making quite the advancements, I saw a doco with James May on this and sony, honda, and a few other companies were doing very very well in the technology. Could be something else to look into.
