Thumbs up The economic value and impact of .au web addresses

The .au Domain Administration (auDA), AusRegistry and Deloitte Access Economics have released the first ever report into the economic value and impact of .au web addresses.

http://ausregistry.com.au/research/

Some really cool insight into the growth of the .au Market, and includes an infographic which we all love.

Fantastic information resource Anthony - it is interesting to see that over 4300 people are employed in this industry with a value of almost half a billion dollars!

It is great to see that there are only 0.61 registrations per business in the major cities, so there is still plenty of room for growth.

Yeah some nice stats there.

Here's a question - just thinking conceptually how do you think the value of domains would relate to the number of domains registered?

Ie would a 600% increase in domains registrations imply a linear or exponential increase in values? There has to be some relationship...

No, only a very loose relationship.

Best example are when values fall alot, eg dot com crash, .mobi bust whilst registration numbers will typically fall by a far smaller amount.

A lot of markets have fairly minimal value across the board (no real liquidity, only the very best really worth something) but might experience a fairly good rise in registrations.

I think it's probably tighter for markets that don't have a huge degree of speculation & investment don't you think?

Any market (domain or otherwise) that is underpinned by speculative investment is going to be volatile - assets will fluctuate on a lot of other things other than supply and demand.

I would suggest that .au is more in this camp than many other extensions so .au domain values probably do have a closer relationship to domain numbers. I also think this might be exponential too...
