It is very true in my view. Look at how all the old ones have done over time, .ws->.cc->.biz->.info->.us->.mobi->.asia->.pro None of them have become extensions with any resonance with the public.

I think .net is still quite decent, yet a lot of random things like .cc .co .pro .tel hard to tell if they will ever go any where.
