The domains were not terminated, just the registrar. Owners didn't lose their domains, they just went elsewhere with auDA as an intermediary I believe.

I think you misread his post. He didn't say they've been deleted yet, we was saying the domains that have not yet been transferred from auDA (as the intermediary registrar) to another registrar as part of the process will come up for renewal and subsequently drop - and there might be some gems in there.
