Default AUDA new drop list to come daily

AUDA have just announced

We have published the outcome of the review on our website at http://www.auda.org.au/reviews/red-2009/.

In summary, we are proposing to make the following changes to the Domain Expiry, Renewal and Deletion Policy:

change the random domain purge time to a fixed, publicly known time

publish an official domain drop list

allow registrants to set a common expiry date for multiple domain names.

Beat you to it Don (see post 2 mins ago!)

Let's discuss on your thread - big news isn't it.

Wonder how far in advance they will be publishing the drop list - would it be daily (eg when domains hit renew prohibited) or further in advance?

Yes it is good news and gives more time for us domainers to get ready to grab a domain we like.
I would think 30 days in advance for a list as that's the time before dropping, of course the owner could still renew in that 30 day period. I didn't see when the drop list will start, do you know?
I see auda are going to have a set time each day for drops as well, this is suppose to make it fairer for other registrars to grab any domains for clients, I thinks thats fair, might bring a few other registrars into the dropping game.

Don

This is definitely interesting news.

How will it effect dropcatching services like D8? If we know exactly what time the names are going to expire, does that make them obsolete?

I don't think so - I'm sure you'd prefer to have a catcher like D8 slamming the registry with X requests/second per connection for a domain than hitting refresh manually.

They will lose some competitive advantage though - that's what auDA's intention was after all.

There is a little bit of irony here in that George Pongas from Domain8 is one of the newly elected board members to auDA! (And a really nice guy to deal with as well).

Been waiting for the announcement.

My understanding was that the official drop list was going to be distributed to registrars daily. This had to be done otherwise AusRegistry was going to get hammered with even more requests.

Might have to dust off the old drop scripts!

Makes sense although you wonder what the performance will be like for those couple of minutes round drop time. If everyone's concentrating their efforts on that tiny period of time it might cause problems??

And now we know why, they've rebranded Domain8 to DROP.com.au.
